Best time to visit Osaka: month-by-month weather

When is the best time to visit Osaka? Late March to May and October to late November: afternoons are mild (14 to 25 °C, or 57 to 77 °F), skies are often clear, and the city enjoys cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in the fall. Winter is cool but the driest time of year, and the cheapest. Summer is the least comfortable season: the rainy season in June, then humid heat, with an average high of nearly 34 °C (93 °F) in August.

Osaka has a humid subtropical climate, close to that of neighboring Kyoto: cool, fairly dry winters, a mild spring, a rainy season (tsuyu) from June to about mid-July, then a very hot summer. With an average high of 33.7 °C (93 °F) in August, Osaka is hotter than Tokyo in summer. September stays hot and can be hit by typhoons, before a bright autumn. Since much of the sightseeing is in the city, between lively districts, museums and covered markets, Osaka can be visited year-round, but comfort varies a lot with the season. Japanese holidays (Golden Week, Obon, New Year) also strongly affect prices. Here is how to choose, based on the official normals of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Temperatures and rainfall: 1991–2020 normals for the Osaka station, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Crowds and prices: our estimate based on Japanese holidays and tourist seasons.

Note: according to the same normals, Osaka averages 6 to 7 days of rain (at least 0.5 mm (0.02 in)) per month from November to February, compared with 12 in June. August is both the hottest and the sunniest month (about 222 hours of sunshine): it rains less than in June, but the heat and humidity make afternoons difficult. In winter, sunshine averages around 140 to 150 hours a month.

Osaka’s seasons: pros and cons

Spring (March to May): cherry blossoms and mild weather

March warms up quickly (14 °C (57 °F) in the afternoon) and the cherry trees usually bloom from the end of the month. Osaka Castle Park, Kema Park along the Okawa River and the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park, in the north of the city, are among the busiest spots for hanami. The bloom lasts about a week in any one place and its timing varies from year to year. April (20 °C (68 °F)) and May (25 °C (77 °F)) are very pleasant for walking between districts and taking day trips to Kyoto, Nara or Himeji.

  • Pros: ideal temperatures, parks in bloom, pleasant day trips across Kansai
  • Cons: expensive hotels during cherry blossom season, crowded parks, Golden Week from late April to early May
  • Our tip: the second half of May combines good weather with prices back to normal

Summer (June to August): rain, heat and festivals

June is the wettest month (185 mm (7.3 in)): the rainy season brings mostly gray skies and humid air, without continuous rain. It usually ends around mid-July. Then the heat sets in: average highs of nearly 32 °C (90 °F) in July and 33.7 °C (93 °F) in August, with nights above 24 °C (75 °F). In late July, the Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan’s great festivals, fills Tenmangu shrine and the Okawa River with a boat procession and fireworks. The Obon holidays in mid-August push prices up.

  • Pros: summer festivals, long evenings in lively districts, plenty of air-conditioned places
  • Cons: sticky heat, risk of heatstroke, high prices around Obon
  • Who is it for? Travelers with no other dates: sightsee early in the morning and keep the afternoon for museums, the aquarium and covered shopping arcades

Autumn (September to November): clear skies and autumn leaves

September stays hot (29.5 °C (85 °F)) and rainy: it is a time when typhoons can disrupt flights and trains. October turns mild (24 °C (75 °F)) and the weather often settles. November is one of the best months: clear skies, 18 °C (64 °F) in the afternoon and maples that usually turn red from mid-November. Minoo Park, north of the city, is known for its waterfall surrounded by maples, and Kyoto is less than an hour away.

  • Pros: pleasant temperatures, drier air, autumn leaves in Osaka and across Kansai
  • Cons: possible typhoons in September, heavy crowds in Kyoto and at maple-viewing sites in November
  • Our tip: staying in Osaka in November is often cheaper than staying in Kyoto, while still allowing day trips there

Winter (December to February): quiet and low prices

Winter is cool (10 to 12 °C (50 to 54 °F) in the afternoon, about 3 °C (37 °F) at night) but it is the driest season: less than 61 mm (2.4 in) of rain a month. Snow is rare in the city. Year-end illuminations brighten Umeda and Nakanoshima. From about December 29 to January 3, many shops, museums and restaurants close or shorten their hours, and shrines receive many visitors for the first visit of the year.

  • Pros: low prices in January–February, uncrowded sites, often dry weather
  • Cons: short days, cold evenings, closures around New Year
  • Who is it for? Budget travelers, food lovers (Osaka’s hot dishes suit the season) and anyone combining the trip with Kansai’s hot springs

When to book your trip to Osaka

For cherry blossom season, Golden Week, Obon, November and New Year, book your accommodation 3 to 6 months ahead: Osaka also serves as a base for travelers visiting Kyoto, which increases demand. In January–February and June, a few weeks’ notice is often enough. You can fly into Kansai International Airport, or into Tokyo (Narita or Haneda) and continue to Osaka by Shinkansen.
