Pattaya travel guide: things to do, when to go and safety tips

Pattaya is the big beach resort of the Gulf of Thailand, about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Bangkok. An urban beach, the quieter Jomtien area, the Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch botanical garden and nightlife: this Pattaya travel guide covers what to do, when to go and which precautions to take, based on official climate normals and US and UK government travel advice.

Once a fishing village, Pattaya was transformed from the mid-1960s, when American soldiers on leave from the nearby U-Tapao air base began staying there. Today it is the country’s leading beach resort by number of tourists. Its mass tourism caters both to family leisure and to the nightlife it is known for.

Things to do in Pattaya: the highlights

The Sanctuary of Truth

Begun in 1981 on the initiative of businessman Lek Viriyaphan, the Sanctuary of Truth is a huge building made entirely of wood and still unfinished. It is Pattaya’s most striking cultural sight.

Nong Nooch botanical garden

17 km (11 mi) from the centre, Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden is both a botanical garden and a tourist attraction. Allow half a day, ideally in the morning before the heat.

Pattaya Beach and Beach Road

The main beach forms a crescent of about 4 km (2.5 mi), lined by Beach Road with its shops, restaurants and malls. At its southern end begins Walking Street, the pedestrian nightlife strip. Wikipedia notes that Pattaya’s beaches are polluted by untreated sewage during heavy rain: check the water quality, especially in the wet season.

Jomtien

To the south, the Jomtien area is quieter and the sea is cleaner, according to Wikipedia. It is often the best choice for a family stay or a quieter trip.

Pratumnak Hill (Phra Tamnak)

Between Pattaya Beach and Jomtien, the Phra Tamnak headland is nicknamed « Buddha Hill » for the temples on its summit. It offers views over the bay.

Theme and water parks

Pattaya has several parks, including Pattaya Park (Jomtien Park), originally a large water park, and themed water parks. An option for families, best scheduled outside the hottest hours.

Getting there and getting around

  • From Bangkok: Pattaya is about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of the capital by road. At the airport, the U.S. Department of State advises using only public transport from the official pick-up area, cars from the limousine counters, rail links or a car from your hotel.
  • Flights: most international travellers fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, then continue to Pattaya by road.
  • On the road: the UK FCDO (GOV.UK, updated 12 October 2026) notes that Thailand has a high number of road traffic accidents, particularly with motorcycles, and that UK drivers need the 1968 International Driving Permit along with their UK licence; US drivers should check the rules with the Royal Thai Embassy.

Where to stay

Pattaya’s seafront (Beach Road) puts you at the heart of the action; Jomtien is quieter and better suited to families. The areas near Walking Street are noisy at night.

Entry requirements, health and safety

  • US citizens (U.S. Department of State, travel.state.gov, page updated August 20, 2026): pre-arrival online registration is required; a passport valid at least six months beyond arrival is strongly recommended; you may be asked for an onward or return ticket or proof of funds.
  • British citizens (FCDO, GOV.UK, updated 12 October 2026): passport valid at least 6 months after arrival with 1 blank page; from 15 September 2026, visa-exempt entry is up to 30 days for tourism only; land-border visa-exempt entries are normally limited to 2 per calendar year; you may need proof of funds (10,000 THB per person / 20,000 THB per family) and onward travel; overstay fine of 500 THB a day, up to 20,000 THB.
  • Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): mandatory for all foreign nationals since 1 May 2025; it can be completed within the 3 days before arrival.
  • 30 days for US citizens too: The U.S. State Department page (last updated August 20, 2026) still mentions 60 days, but it predates the change: under the Thai rules in force since 15 September 2026, US citizens are also limited to 30 days (Tourism Authority of Thailand, 1 September 2026). Check with the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington before you travel.
  • TDAC website: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is completed online at tdac.immigration.go.th.
  • Scams: the UK FCDO (GOV.UK, updated 12 October 2026) warns of bank card fraud and ATM skimming: use ATMs inside banks and keep your card in sight. Keep an eye on your drinks and never leave your belongings unattended on the beach.
  • Safety: The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and parts of southern Songkhla (Thailand–Malaysia border) and to areas within 20 km (12 mi) of the Cambodian land border (land crossings with Cambodia are suspended). Pattaya is not among these areas.
  • Health: see your doctor or a travel clinic before you go, in particular about rabies, which the UK FCDO lists among the health risks in Thailand. Travel insurance covering your whole stay is strongly recommended.
