Barrier reef, white-sand cayes, rainforest and Maya cities: Belize, a small English-speaking country between Mexico and Guatemala, combines sea and jungle over short distances. Prices are higher than in neighboring countries and caution is needed, as both the UK FCDO and the U.S. Department of State point out. This Belize travel guide helps you choose what to see, which itinerary to follow and what budget to plan.

Safety: what the UK and US governments say
- High crime rate: according to the U.S. Department of State (travel.state.gov, last updated June 18, 2026), Belize has a high crime rate and one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world; be especially careful in the south side of Belize City and in some remote border areas.
- Gang violence occurs most frequently in Belize City, particularly south of Haulover Creek (Southside); tourists are not normally the targets, but anyone nearby could be affected (UK FCDO, GOV.UK, updated 12 June 2026).
- Theft of cash, cards and phones affects tourists, including in San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Ignacio (GOV.UK). Avoid dark alleys, use ATMs in well-lit areas or inside a bank, and use a qualified guide off the beaten track.
- Driving at night is strongly discouraged (U.S. Department of State).
- Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November: follow the US National Hurricane Center and the National Meteorological Service of Belize (GOV.UK).
When to go to Belize
The best period is the dry season, from February to April, extending into May inland. There is little rain on the coast and the cayes, the sea is often calm for diving and the tracks to the Maya sites are passable. The rainy season, from June to November, coincides with the hurricane season; October is the wettest month. The south is much wetter than the north. All the details, with official normals from the national weather service, are in our article best time to visit Belize.
What to see in Belize: the highlights

Caye Caulker
A small car-free island, Caye Caulker is the favorite base of independent travelers: sandy streets, colorful houses, docks over turquoise water. People come for snorkeling on the nearby barrier reef, notably in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and at Shark Ray Alley, and for dive trips. The atmosphere is more relaxed and prices slightly lower than on Ambergris Caye.
Ambergris Caye and San Pedro
The country’s largest caye has most of the hotels, restaurants and dive centers, around the town of San Pedro. The barrier reef lies a few hundred meters offshore. People get around by golf cart, bicycle or water taxi. The U.S. Department of State reports that several credit card fraud rings are believed to be active in San Pedro: keep an eye on your cards.
The barrier reef and the Blue Hole
The Belize Barrier Reef, the longest in the Western Hemisphere, is a World Heritage Site. Offshore, three atolls (Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe and Glover’s Reef) attract divers. The Great Blue Hole, a circular sinkhole more than 300 meters (about 980 ft) across, is on Lighthouse Reef: the boat trip is long and the deep dive is for experienced divers only; there are also scenic flights by small plane. The UK FCDO reports injuries and fatalities from snorkeling and diving, mainly due to inadequate safety precautions and severe weather: only use registered and licensed operators (GOV.UK).
San Ignacio and the Cayo District
In the west, near the Guatemalan border, San Ignacio is the gateway to the jungle. Nearby: the Maya site of Xunantunich, reached by a hand-cranked ferry, the Mountain Pine Ridge reserve and its waterfalls, and Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, where you swim and walk to the remains of Maya ceremonies, only with a licensed guide. San Ignacio is also a base for a day trip to Tikal, in Guatemala. The UK FCDO reports armed criminals active in remote forested areas, particularly along the Guatemalan border, although the area is patrolled and no incidents involving tourists have been reported (GOV.UK): go with an agency.
Caracol
In the heart of the Chiquibul reserve, Caracol was one of the great Maya cities of the region. Its main temple, Caana, is still one of the tallest buildings in the country. Access is by a long track from San Ignacio, with an agency; the site is close to the Guatemalan border.
Lamanai
In the north, the Lamanai site is reached by boat on the New River from Orange Walk, through wetlands rich in birds and sometimes crocodiles. Its temples, including the Mask Temple, rise out of the forest. It is one of the most complete excursions in the country, combining nature and archaeology.
Placencia and Hopkins
On the south coast, the Placencia peninsula has long sandy beaches and a slower pace than the northern cayes. Hopkins is a Garifuna village where you can discover the food and drumming of this Afro-Caribbean culture. Both bases give access to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, known for jaguar protection, and to the southern cayes.
Things to do in Belize: experiences not to miss
- Snorkel or dive on the barrier reef (Hol Chan, Blue Hole)
- Slow down on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye
- Explore the Cayo District from San Ignacio: Xunantunich, ATM cave, Mountain Pine Ridge
- Visit the Maya cities of Caracol and Lamanai
- Stay on the south coast, in Placencia or Hopkins

Budget for a trip to Belize
Belize is noticeably more expensive than its Central American neighbors: many goods are imported, and sea and cave excursions take up a large share of the budget. Indicative amounts per person per day, excluding international flights (converted from our euro estimates at the ECB rate of 23 October 2026, €1 = US$1.12):
| Item | Budget | Comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (based on a shared double room) | roughly US$20–45 (guesthouse, hostel) | roughly US$80–170 |
| Meals | roughly US$15–30 | roughly US$40–65 |
| Transport | roughly US$5–15 (bus, water taxi) | roughly US$20–55 (private transfers, domestic flights) |
| Activities and sightseeing | roughly US$20–45 | roughly US$55–110 |
| Total per day | roughly US$65–110 | roughly US$170–335 |
To cut costs, choose Caye Caulker over Ambergris Caye, eat in small local restaurants (rice and beans, fish dishes) and travel outside the year-end holidays and Easter.
Who is Belize for?
Our verdict by travel style, based on the information in this guide:
- Diving and snorkeling: ideal: a UNESCO-listed barrier reef, the Hol Chan reserve, the atolls; the Blue Hole is for experienced divers only.
- Archaeology and jungle: yes: Xunantunich, Caracol, Lamanai by boat and the ATM cave with a licensed guide, from San Ignacio.
- Independent travelers: yes: car-free Caye Caulker is the most popular base and slightly cheaper than Ambergris Caye.
- Couples: yes: the beaches of Placencia, the Garifuna village of Hopkins, quiet hotels north or south of Ambergris Caye.
- Budget travelers: average: the country is noticeably more expensive than its neighbors, roughly US$65–110 per person per day, and a day of diving can exceed this budget.
- Families: possible on the cayes and in Placencia, following the safety advice of the UK FCDO and the U.S. Department of State.
Getting around Belize
- Water taxis: regular services link Belize City with Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. Crossings can be suspended in bad weather.
- Domestic flights: small planes link Belize City with the cayes, Placencia, Dangriga and Punta Gorda: handy to save time. After the hijacking of a small aircraft on an internal flight on 17 April 2025, security was stepped up at municipal airstrips: allow extra time (GOV.UK).
- Buses: cheap, they link the main towns but are slow and not very comfortable; the UK FCDO notes that many are poorly maintained and lack seatbelts. For excursions, shuttles and organized transfers are simpler.
- Car: renting gives you freedom inland. Many roads lack markings, reflectors and shoulders, roadside assistance is often unavailable and driving at night is strongly discouraged (U.S. Department of State, last updated June 18, 2026). Belize drives on the right. UK visitors can use a UK photocard licence for up to 3 months (UK FCDO, GOV.UK, updated 12 June 2026); valid US or international driving permits are accepted for three months after entry (U.S. Department of State).
- Taxis: only take registered taxis with green licence plates, ask the fare before getting in and expect to pay in cash (GOV.UK). Uber and Lyft are not available (U.S. Department of State).
Where to stay in Belize
On Caye Caulker, most accommodation is within walking distance of the « Split », the channel at the north end of the village. On Ambergris Caye, San Pedro is convenient, while hotels north or south of the island are quieter but require getting around by boat or golf cart. In the Cayo, San Ignacio has the widest choice, and forest lodges let you sleep close to nature. In the south, choose Placencia for the beach and services, Hopkins for the village atmosphere. Belize City is mainly a transit stop.
The UK FCDO advises only using accommodation and campgrounds that appear genuine and established (GOV.UK). The U.S. Department of State notes that many lodgings have no carbon monoxide detector, even with sources of this gas, and suggests traveling with a portable one.
Entry requirements for Belize
US citizens
- According to the U.S. Department of State (travel.state.gov, last updated June 18, 2026), you need a passport valid for the length of your stay, proof of an onward or return ticket and sufficient funds for your stay. Tourists staying less than 30 days do not need a visa; to stay longer, get your passport re-stamped at an immigration office and pay a fee for each additional month, up to six months. Belize does not require special immunizations.
- When children travel without both parents, officials ask for proof of consent from the non-traveling parent and the children’s birth certificates.
UK citizens
- According to the UK FCDO (GOV.UK foreign travel advice, updated 12 June 2026), you can visit Belize without a visa for 30 days; each additional 30 days costs 200 Belize dollars at an immigration office. Your passport must expire more than 3 months after your arrival date, and some airlines may refuse boarding if it is not valid for more than 6 months.
- Travelers arriving at Philip Goldson International Airport must complete an immigration and customs declaration form, preferably the digital version before travel. If you leave by land, or by water to Guatemala or Mexico, you pay a departure tax of 40 Belize dollars or 20 US dollars. Children traveling with one parent need a notarized letter of consent from the other parent.
Entry requirements checked on 24 October 2026; check them again before you travel. For customs allowances on your return, check your home country’s rules (e.g. CBP in the US, HMRC in the UK).
Health and safety
- Health: the UK FCDO (GOV.UK, updated 12 June 2026) lists Zika, chikungunya, dengue and malaria among the health risks; check vaccine recommendations at least 8 weeks before your trip. The U.S. Department of State also lists leishmaniasis and New World screwworm. Medical facilities are limited and serious cases are normally evacuated to the US at the patient’s expense (GOV.UK); most providers only accept cash (U.S. Department of State). Insurance covering medical costs and evacuation is essential. Bring your prescription medicines in their original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.
- Safety: crime is high across the country, including sexual assault, armed robbery and murder, and tourists are sometimes targeted, especially at resorts and along roads and rivers (U.S. Department of State). Avoid wearing expensive jewelry, keep valuables out of sight and use a qualified guide for trips off the beaten track (GOV.UK). Emergency number: 911 or 90 (GOV.UK).
- Natural hazards and the sea: hurricane season from 1 June to 30 November; heavy rain can cause flooding (GOV.UK). For snorkeling and diving, only use registered and licensed operators and check the weather forecast.
Practical tips for Belize
- Money: the US dollar is accepted almost everywhere; check whether displayed prices are in BZD or USD. Cards are accepted in hotels and agencies, but carry cash for small shops and water taxis; use ATMs in well-lit areas or inside a bank (GOV.UK). Do not keep all your means of payment in the same bag. Our currency converter helps you estimate your spending.
- Internet: a reasonable network in towns and on the cayes, weaker in the forest and the south. A local SIM card or an eSIM is useful for bookings and offline maps.
- Documents: make copies of your passport and keep an electronic version.
- Etiquette: English makes things easy, but Spanish is widely spoken in the north and west. Ask before photographing people, especially in Maya and Garifuna villages.
- Environment: do not touch the coral, use reef-safe sunscreen and follow the rules of the marine reserves.
